"It has been inspiring and thrilling to watch furious, cleareyed teenagers shame and vilify gutless politicians and soul-dead lobbyists for their complicity in the murders of their friends."

Every once in a while (but not often) I read an essay that is so good that it takes my breath away.  Then, once my breath returns, I am consumed by envy. Here is a paragraph from just such an essay.

The students of Parkland are like veterans coming home from the bloody front of the N.R.A.’s de facto war on children. They’ve seen their friends, teachers and coaches gunned down in the halls. To them, powerful Washington lobbyists and United States senators suddenly look like what they are: cheesy TV spokesmodels for murder weapons. It has been inspiring and thrilling to watch furious, cleareyed teenagers shame and vilify gutless politicians and soul-dead lobbyists for their complicity in the murders of their friends. Last week Wayne LaPierre was reduced to gibbering like Gen. Jack D. Ripper in “Dr. Strangelove” about a “socialist” takeover and “hardening” our schools. You could see the whites all around his irises. That look is fear.

Tim Kreider. Read the entire essay in the NY Times, and then buy his latest book.

  1. C'mon, Carl, no matter how well it's written, "yada, yada, yada, blah, blah, blah" is still just THAT. Psychobabble and gobbledygook don't improve things, either. This Kreider "essay" is just like ALL the lame-stream madia since Feb. 14. You point ALL your fingers at the NRA, and "gun culture", and get all "outraged". Yet you continue to ignore the elephant in the room. You won't mention DRUGS, legal or illegal, or PhRMA, or psychiatry. Psychiatry is a pseudoscience, a drug racket, and a means of social control. It's 21st Century Phrenology, with potent neuro-toxins. Once again we have a shooter, Cruz, who was "treated for ADHD and depression". That means Adderal or Ritalin, which are methyphenidate and dextroamphetamine, - legal speed almost identical to the crystal meth of "Breaking Bad". So-called "SSRI antidepressants" which have had FDA-mandated black box warnings alerting users to suicidal and homicidal "side effects" for over 2 decades now. What you insist on ignoring in your narrow-minded vilification of guns & the NRA is the *DRUGS* all the mass-casualty shooters have been on. The guns themselves do NOT *cause* the murders. Sure, they *allow*, maybe even *facilitate* the murders. But the guns DO NOT CAUSE the murders. That's the fatal flaw you over-emotional literary hand-wringing allows. You want to give a pass to the TRUE CAUSE of too many gun homicides. DRUGS.
But then chances are, you yourself have been to a psychiatrist, and taken psych drugs. Haven't you? hey, "Better Living Through Chemistry"....
