Why market-based solutions to health care will continue to fail

John Cassidy writes in The New Yorker:

The fact is that the health-care industry, which makes up about a sixth of the American economy, isn’t like the market for apples or iPhones. For a number of reasons (which economists understand pretty well), it is riven with problems. Serious illnesses can be enormously costly to treat; people don’t know when they will get ill; the buyers of health insurance know more about their health than the sellers; and insurers have a strong incentive to avoid providing their product to the sick people who need it the most.

  1. Apparently, "The New Yorker" doesn't take comments from us low-life internet users, so here's the comment I would have made to Mr. John Cassidy. First, for you to continue to pimp the bogus "right-left"/"conservative-liberal" duopoly does nobody any favors. The single greatest threat to both "healthcare", and the American People, is that delusional make-belief. Also, Cassidy states that Americans *"need"* both "mental health" care, AND prescription drugs. So-called "mental illnesses" are both grossly and negligently over-diagnosed, and over drugs are thus grossly and negligently over-prescribed. The Federal "Community Mental Health center Act" was signed in 1964, and it set up the whole current scam, -yes, *SCAM*,- of "Community Mental Health Centers". these centers serve 2 primary purposes for the overly-enriched, entitled ruling elites. They serve as "employment agencies", providing taxpayer subsidized employment to persons, usually college educated, who would otherwise be employed in well-paying managerial/supervisory/administrative positions in the many industries which have been out-sourced and off-shored. Second, they facilitate to gross over-prescribing of grosslty over-priced and largely superfluous DRUGS. Neither of these contributes in any material way to a healthier population. How else to explain the fact that the more "mental health" care we have, the more "mentally ill" people we have? Current "mental health care" does NOT result in a mentally healthier population. Just the opposite. Psychiatry is a pseudoscience, a drug racket, and a means of social control. The DSM is a catalog of billing codes. ALL of the bogus "diagnoses" in the DSM were INVENTED as excuses and justifications to $ELL DRUG$.... So-called "mental illnesses" are exactly as real as presents from Santa Claus, but not more real. Apologists, especially of the un-American and divisive kind, such as Mr. John Cassidy continue to be part of the PROBLEM, not the SOLUTION.
