“I never thought that sending my daughter to college would ruin our lives.”

New Jersey operates a student loan program that looks more like a mob operation. It has sued a lymphoma victim, demanded payment from the mother of a murdered student, and forced countless recent graduates into bankruptcy. The story is on the front page of the New York Times, but the credit goes to Pro Publica's investigative reporter Annie Waldman.
