“The University of Minnesota lives today thanks in no small part to hundreds of slaves on a plantation in Charleston.”

William Aiken, a wealthy South Carolina slave owner, bailed out the struggling University of Minnesota with large donations in the late 1850s. The university took Aiken's money, but then proceeded to erase the man from all of its official histories for 150 years.

St. Cloud State historian Christopher Lehman is correcting the record.
