“Have you ever been charged with or convicted of or pled guilty or nolo contendere to a crime other than a minor traffic offense, or are there any criminal charges now pending against you?”

Many Southern universities use this question as a possible way to discriminate against African American applicants, according to The New York Times.  The Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is making the issue a national initiative.

What the Times does not mention is that the University of Minnesota asks this question of applicants too.
