Say no to Beeson

Gov. Arne Carlson's letter about research abuse at the U may be getting national attention, but it did not have much effect on the Minnesota legislature.  On Tuesday evening, legislators on the higher education committees voted almost unanimously to return Board of Regents Chairman Richard Beeson to his seat on the Board.

In his letter to the legislature, Gov. Carlson noted that he had brought his concerns about research misconduct to Beeson.

"Beeson’s response was that it 'has not risen to the level of our concern.' When pressed on the negative publicity, he could only offer that 'it has not hurt our brand.'”

The recommendations of the higher education committees are not binding until they are endorsed later this month.  Let's hope we can change some minds before then.

The "level of concern" here seem to be that of Harry Lime on the ferris wheel in Vienna looking down at the people crawling like ants on the ground below.

"Look down there. Would you really feel any pity if one of those dots stop moving forever? If I offered you 20 thousand pounds for every dot that stopped would you really tell me to keep my money? Or would you figure out how many dots you could afford to spend? Free of income tax, old man. Free of income tax!"
