The Slaves of Atalissa, Iowa

When I finished reading this story, I felt like I had been kicked in the head.  Dozens of mentally disabled men shipped from Texas to Iowa, living in a filthy, rodent-infested bunkhouse, forced to work a grueling job pulling the guts out of factory-farmed turkeys for $65 a month -- for thirty years?  And nobody in town spoke out?

Dan Barry has written a wrenching, heartbreaking report for The New York Times, called "The Boys in the Bunkhouse."
